While the current decade has seen no shortage of artists to keep hip-hop earnest, “conscious,” or sonically diverse, few have so eagerly pushed the form to its bleary edges as Doseone and Jel. The two helped break the ground for the Bay Area’s Anticon collective in projects like Themselves and 13 & God, though they’ve also found recent success in their even more confounding six-piece band Subtle. The Themselves moniker recently returned with the sprawling theFREEhoudini mixtape, which includes guests like Buck 65, Busdriver, and Sole. More importantly, there’s still chemistry between Dose’s nasally rap acrobatics and the bleak expanse of Jel’s production, which bodes well for the group's reunion, centered on the new CrownsDown.
