Artist These United States

  • These United States

Bubbly yet moody, D.C.’s These United States employ lackadaisical electronics and lead-knuckled strums on Crimes, their 2008 sophomore full-length. Their third album, Everything Touches Everything, doesn’t make them any easier to pin down: They’re a little bit rock, a little bit psychedelic, and while they can be deadly serious, their sound is often playful. There’s a hint of early Beck to the band’s hazy drift, not to mention its mumbled, trembling vocals and scattershot arrangements—including diffidently tickled keyboards and asthmatic horns. Their latest release, last year’s What Lasts, ditches some of the electronic elements in favor of a newfound rootsy twang.
