Those Darlins

Those Darlins

On their 2009 self-titled debut, the three women of Those Darlins crafted smart songs about DUIs and gnarly-looking dames while deftly evoking the spirit of Tammy Wynette, if she had a nice whiskey buzz and played the ukulele. The chugging stop-gap 7-inch Night Jogger appears to be the final statement from that version of the band: The recent Screws Get Loose traffics in a less distinct take on au courant surf-pop tropes and Spectorisms. At least there’s a shared sense of spunk between Wynette and the girl-groups the band channels on Screws Get Loose—the curled-lip delivery of “Be Your Bro” should gain all sorts of visceral thrill in a raucous club setting.
