Time Since Western
Andy Brawner, who divides his life between Madison and Milwaukee, describes Time Since Western as a solo project that aims to sound like a band. He recorded most of TSW's 2008 album, A Sun Goes Down, by himself, displaying songwriting and arrangement strengths that bring out plainspoken emotion and a conflicted, heat-mirage finish. While it's hard to equal Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon), Brawner really seems to grasp his main influence's ability to create a bold track with a few subtle elements. TSW was once an actual band live, but now it's Brawner playing solo and using such tools as a loop pedal to keep the expansive vibe intact as he tries out a new batch of songs.
