David “Honeyboy” Edwards has James Lewis Carter Ford beat as the oldest bluesman still on the touring circuit—but unlike Edwards, the man otherwise known as T-Model Ford has only been playing his nasty, self-taught form of the blues for 34 years. It’s not as if he doesn’t have a deep well of woe to draw those blues from, though: The 91-year-old Ford was sentenced for a murder conviction in his 20s, and just last year was temporarily sidelined by a stroke. He wasn’t off the road long, however, returning in 2011 with an extensive touring schedule and a new record of hypnotic Delta mud, Taledragger. At this rate, he won’t just outlast Edwards—Ford might live longer than much of his audience.
