HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Tom Russell

Tom Russell’s life is the stuff novels are made of: He’s driven a New York cab, toured with a European circus, and obtained a degree in criminology. Russell came to music relatively late in life, but he’s been crafting compelling story-songs for more than 25 years, releasing a string of Americana-noir albums dripping with wit, passion, and the darker side of humanity. Having maintained a nearly 30-year correspondence with Charles Bukowski, Russell knows how to pick his collaborators—he invited members of alt-country act Calexico to join him on the moody, literate songs of 2009’s Blood And Candle Smoke. Ever the restless troubadour, Russell’s currently touring behind this year’s Mesabi, featuring songs recorded with Calexico, as well as Gretchen Peters, Fats Kaplin, and others.
