Artist Top Gun

Before he became the humorless face of Scientology, Tom Cruise was America’s hero—cool incarnate in Ray-Bans and a cocky grin. Cruise’s rise to dominance arguably began with 1986’s Top Gun, a tale of hotheaded fighter pilots who live only to break rules in and out of the cockpit. Aided by a totally ’80s soundtrack led by schlockmeister Kenny Loggins, Top Gun revels in the bad-boy shenanigans—and, in one memorably homoerotic volleyball sequence, the greased-up physiques—of Cruise and rival pilot Val Kilmer (known by his too-cool-for-surnames handle “Iceman”) as they vie for the affections of improbably hot civilian instructor Kelly McGillis.
