Stunningly, the “Weird Al” Yankovic vehicle UHFwas not the summer blockbuster and company rejuvenator that Orion Pictures hoped it would be back in 1989. Later finding a cult following, the comedy follows oft-unemployed daydreamer George Newman (Yankovic) as he and his best friend Bob (David Bowe) take over the bankrupt television station that Newman’s uncle won in a poker game—that’s how most networks change hands, right? But running the sparsely watched Channel 62 is hard; that is, until Newman finds a star in rival Channel 8’s former janitor Stanley Spadowski (Michael Richards). Things turn bad, however, when the same uncle’s gambling problem puts the station in jeopardy. In the end, it turns out all of the problems can all be solved with multiple kidnappings and a telethon.
