Ume
For all its post-punk trappings, Austin’s Ume plays a surprisingly direct type of rock. On the trio’s debut EP, Sunshower, the dense tangles formed by frontwoman Lauren Larson’s honest-to-God riffage and the throbbing rhythms of bassist/husband Eric Larson and drummer Rachel Fuhrer are consistently undercut by alluring vocal hooks, delivered in Larson’s throaty, Bilinda Butcher-plus-E.G. Daily purr. That directness is augmented by the band’s explosive live show, which frequently finds Larson’s blonde locks cascading in time with torrents of guitar effects. Phantoms, the band’s recently released follow-up, harnesses all that live fury and layers atmospheric fuzz on top, tempering the rock a bit while still remaining fierce as ever.
