Artist Underculture

  • Pete Olson

Madison band Underculture is pretty stubborn about playing it old-school, stripping punk-rock and psychobilly sounds down to spare parts under bassist Blair Clark's mean, motor-oil-gargling vocals. Basic as it seems, the band's sound on its self-titled 2008 EP filled a little gap in Madison's musical needs. Now the trio follows it with the album Ice Cream Socialism, a beyond-blunt political rant-a-thon. You wouldn't accuse their lyrics of getting all caught up in fancy poetry, either: "Blood Off My Hands" begins with the line "The President woke up in a pool of blood..." and "An Apology" laments Mexico's decline into "a colony of the good ol' USA." Just like the sound, it's simple, but sure as shit drives the point home.
