Unknown Mortal Orchestra

While it hasn’t garnered nearly as much Internet attention as, say, those Odd Future rascals, Unknown Mortal Orchestra is conjuring up a fair bit of well-deserved blogosphere hype. The band didn’t make it easy, though—the group, just as elusive as its name suggests, strategically avoids overexposure and doesn’t cash in on the fact that it comprises members from Neon Indian, Burial, and Mint Chicks to generate buzz. Instead, Unknown Mortal Orchestra lets the instantly disorienting, fuzzed-out funk and basement beats on its self-titled debut, released in June, do all the talking. The lyrics are only there if you want them to be—otherwise they fall back into a hazy mush of synths, badass bass lines, and the occasional nod to classic rock.
