Vivian Girls
Much like the early punk musicians who could be gently described as “incompetent, at best” on their instruments, Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls tap into the inexplicable fun of rackety, out-of-tune noise. The all-female group makes three-chord garage rock that draws equally from Britpop, ’80s punk, riot grrrl acts like Bratmobile and Bikini Kill, and all those high-school punk bands everyone was briefly a part of. On 2009’s Everything Goes Wrong, the Girls made slight improvements in technical proficiency without suppressing their brash, sloppy ruckus, but this spring’s Share The Joy, despite a few attempts at something new, found them stuck in a rut. It’s a common problem for a blog buzz band these days, but here’s hoping that these gals can dig themselves out of this hole.
