Weedeater’s specialty is heavy sludgecore with a Southern slant, and whether serving doses of raw power or long swamp-blues jams, the North Carolina trio maintains a hypnotizing sense of doom and dread. In an odd turn of events, a series of unfortunate accidents has befallen the group since early 2010—including lead singer “Dixie” Dave Collins shooting his own toe off, drummer Keko requiring surgery to repair a torn meniscus, and guitarist Shep breaking his pinkie finger while on tour—which delayed both the tour and the recording of its fourth full-length. But Weedeater is now mostly patched up and ready to battle-test that same Steve Albini-produced Jason ... The Dragon, released this year on Southern Lord.
