A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Weezer

  • Weezer

It’s been 13 years since Weezer dropped Pinkerton, so bemoaning the fact that the band’s subsequent output hasn’t lived up to that monumental, messy testament to heartbreak, alienation, and inappropriate crushes is moot. These days, frontman Rivers Cuomo seems like he couldn’t be less interested in human folly or emotion—the band’s newRaditude is super-slick (thanks to hit-making producers like Butch Walker and Polow Da Don) and geared toward maximum accessibility. Cuomo hasn’t lost his outsider’s perspective—check out the bizarre shout-outs to Best Buy andTitanic on “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To”—or knack for crunchy, power-pop melodies. It's just too bad they’re now serving something so bereft of humanity.
