Yellow Ostrich
One of Alex Schaaf’s early projects as Yellow Ostrich was the Morgan Freeman EP, which made use of the actor’s Wikipedia page as lyrical inspiration. The bedroom beats and movie listing fun of “Morgan Freeman’s Selected Filmography” succeeded in spite of the cutesy concept because of Schaaf’s layered vocals and bouncy production, which carried over to the Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin native’s more organic, kitchen sink wonder, 2010’s The Mistress. Recording in empty movie theaters and dorm rooms, the current New Yorker enlisted some well-placed help, including drummer Michael Tapper (of Bishop Allen and We Are Scientists), to round out the still-sparse charm of songs like “WHALE” and “Hate Me Soon.” Yellow Ostrich is touring now behind its brand-new album, Strange Land.
