Yellowhammers
If you’re the mood for being rocked quietly and unobtrusively, spin the new self-titled record from Yellowhammers, a quintet of Chicago-based country-folk softies. A raucous bunch of porch-loungers, Yellowhammers seem content to pen laid-back anthems about working in factories, catching the “midnight train,” and walking dramatically down lonely streets with flickering streetlights. It's a little depressing, butYellowhammers is just as rife with upbeat ditties and banjo-laden tracks, including a tribute to Elvis Presley that’s sure to please anyone who still pays respect to the King. Jon Langford, guitarist for influential UK country-punkers Mekons (among numerous others), produced the record, but his country background contributes far more than his punk persona, allowing Yellowhammers to maintain their “just having a brewsky” chill.
