Artist Yo Majesty

Yo Majesty—a lesbian/Christian hip-hop duo out of Tampa Bay, Florida—scored heaps of press around the 2008 release of its debut album, Futuristically Speaking... Never Be Afraid. Big-name tastemakers like NME, The New York Times, and Pitchforkpraised Shunda K and Jwl B’s crunk-tinged electro and DIY temperament. There’s also an old-school rap flare at play, with hints of the Geto Boys poking through the lathered sexuality and manic energy. Constantly on tour and fiercely independent (the group left former label Domino Records, an indie hotbed), Yo Majesty is currently prepping a proper sophomore LP.
