Since the turn of the millennium, YOB has been tuning instruments down to the key of doom and churning out super sludgy tunes that often crack the 10-minute mark. Filling the gap between Mastodon and Isis, the band is out to create a mood—a mood so thick and heavy, it likely needs a shovel to clear out the air after a live show. After a period of separation from the band, founding guitarist/vocalist Mike Scheidt is back at the helm. YOB’s latest, Atma, came out in 2011 and features an appearance by Neurosis vocalist Scott Kelly. The album’s closer, “Adrift In The Ocean,” is a 16-minute epic jam, rising and collapsing so furiously that listeners might need to take an extra big bong rip after listening just to perk up.
