Artist Youssou N'Dour

  • youssou n'dour

It’s not always easy to follow the deeper meanings behind Youssou N’Dour’s songs, but the music surrounding his messages is so good that it often doesn’t matter. The Senegalese world-music superstar has made valiant efforts to connect blues, jazz, spirituals, and other music of the African diaspora; and, live, he boasts an undeniable presence. The recent recipient of an honorary doctorate from Yale, N’Dour continues to be recognized as much for his activism as for his work in the musical field. (He did title his solo debut LPNelson Mandela, after all.) Following suit with his efforts toward bridging disparate cultures and fostering global tolerance, N’Dour’s latest, Dakar-Kingston, finds the mbalax innovator working within the roomier confines of reggae.
