Seen as a too-brief period of freedom and pleasant weather in other parts of the world, summer is downright dreaded in Austin. (If DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith grew up here rather than Philadelphia, their “Summertime” would have a much darker edge.) The thought of a hot Austin night doesn’t immediately conjure good-vibes images of swimming pools and frozen drinks—and that seems to be the motivating force behind Zeale’s new mix-tape, The Mashup Smashup. Rather than dwell on the oppressive heat, the MC splits open a fire hydrant full of clever, upbeat rhymes and unexpected sample fodder, spitting over everything from Grizzly Bear and Ratatat to local favorites Ghostland Observatory and The Black And White Years.
