Only Zlam Dunk could write a song as ridiculousand fun as “Castle Beyond The Goblin City.” The ebullient San Marcos dance-punk ensemble sounds no less epic when it’s dealing with real-world matters—on its debut LP, Noble Ancestry, co-vocalists Charlie Day and Taylor Hughes lend the same amount of zeal to Get In The Van-style travelogues, summertime signifiers, and the plot points of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. Nonetheless, the group’s angular, twitchy attack and boundless energy remain its biggest selling points, even as it’s whittled its membership down from eight grinning dudes to a more manageable five.
