Artist Zorch

  • Zorch

Something of a small-scale equivalent to the ebb-and-collapse noise of Fuck Buttons—but with live percussion—Zorch combines the organic and electronic with frequently thrilling results. At the core of the band’s sound is seemingly inhuman percussionist Sam Chown (a.k.a. Shmu), whose frantic, syncopated patterns recall the mathematically precise attack of fellow “lead drummers” Damon Che and Stewart Copeland. On top of Chown’s clattering, multi-instrumentalist Zac Traeger smears low-end drones, arpeggiated Rhodes chords, unidentifiable digital samples, and the occasional wordless vocal. Like the best experimental rock, Zorch tracks like “Zut Alore!” and the new “Cosmic Gloss” challenge the listener without verging into confrontation—revealing the beauty in layered feedback and the ugliness of a triumphant video-game theme.
