In an event that hopefully won't result in a perfect storm of self-satisfaction, Austin will get a little bit greener this Thursday with the opening of America's first Eco Shoppe, a 4,400 sq. foot retail store in the Arboretum area "dedicated to bringing the best in green living products directly to consumers"—products like organic cotton yoga totes, coasters made from recycled motherboard circuits, and green tea patchouli countertop cleanser. Without going into any specifics—like a LEED-certified City Hall, or Central Presbyterian Church's recent "sustainable" Palm Sunday—Eco Shoppe store director Steve Rolfes said, "Austin's dedication to green living makes it a perfect choice for the very first Eco Shoppe." LEED certification is expected for the store itself, which was constructed with renewable, recycled, and composite materials. (Even the glues and adhesives used would pass muster with The Planeteers.) EcoShoppe opens its Douglas fir doors May 21 at 9:30 a.m.
