The first images from Whip It—the Drew Barrymore-directed adaptation of former Texas Rollergirl Shauna Cross' Derby Girl—have been released, and wouldn't you know it, there's a big ol' Texas flag behind Ellen Page's head in the one of the shots. If that doesn't indicate that the film takes place in Austin (and not Michigan, which won Barrymore over with the type of film production incentives Texas legislators refused to support this February), what would?
Viewed with chip removed from shoulder, of course, the movie looks promising, with a cast including Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Ellen Page, Saturday Night Live's Kristen Wiig, and Zoe Bell, last seen strapped to the hood of a speeding car in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. So, yes, it's full of attractive Hollywood ladies as punked-out roller girls, but it's not like they painted Gisele Bündchen up like Siouxsie Sioux and stuck her on a pair of roller skates or anything. And of course, there's no exterior shots here, so it still remains to be seen how well various Michigan locations stand in for Austin. The track scenery, however, is a decent testament to the Rollergirls' Travis County County Expo Center days, despite a suspicious lack of Lone Star tallboys. Whip It!—which Cross reminds USA Today is not a roller-skating musical about Devo, "though that would be a genius movie"—is scheduled to open everywhere October 9.
