If there's one thing any seasoned SXSW attendee knows it's that wristbands are for chumps. Plan accordingly, and you can see just about any act you want for free, often accompanied by complimentary booze and the satisfaction that the festival's usual badge/wristband/regular ticketholder hierarchy has been subverted, at least for a few hours. Because we enjoy bribing people to come be our friend, The A.V. Club and Decider have scheduled two different, totally free parties for SXSW 2009 to help you stick it to The Man. Hey, that's what we're here for.
First up is the
Decider/
The Onion/Barbarian Group party during SXSW Interactive, happening Monday, March 16 at the
Mohawk. The lineup includes two of our favorite locals--dance-rockers
The Lemurs and atmospheric indie kids
Low Line Caller--and the week's first appearance from
The Wooden Birds, the highly anticipated new project from American Analog Set's Andrew Kenny. In between sets, comedian and
Decider space-hog
Eugene Mirman will make with the funny, and
AVC/
Decider editor and fan of talking about himself in the third person
Sean O'Neal will pretend to spin records while cuing up songs on his laptop. Again, this is totally free, no badges are required, and you won't even have to engage in awkward conversations about "new media," because it will be too fucking loud.
But of course, that's all just a warm-up for Friday's SXSW day party brought to you by
The A.V. Club/
Decider and
Canvas Media, which one of the many
Simpsons nerds on our team has christened "It's Pronounced Par-TAY." Beginning at noon, the newly renovated
Radio Room (formerly Bourbon Rocks) plays host to six hours of free music (and possibly comedy, although nothing is confirmed yet) on two different stages. Here's the complete lineup and approximate set times:
Again: No badges or wristbands required, no RSVP necessary. Simply show up ready to rock and/or roll. You're welcome.
