Alejandro Escovedo has been an object of alt-country worship for ages, and the last few years have found him ripping into his work with the fresh enthusiasm of someone who hasn’t been through half as much trouble. After a bout with hepatitis, Escovedo surged back to work with producer John Cale on 2006’s The Boxing Mirror, lamenting and reflecting, but fiercely so. He followed it last year with Real Animal, an album of bright, guitar-driven songs that look back to his years playing in proto-punk band The Nuns and living in New York and San Francisco in the late ’70s.
