Awesome New Republic and The Volunteers at Mohawk

Formed in Miami after graduating from Florida’s Frost School Of Music, Michael John Hancock and Brian Robertson began creating synth- and bass-heavy dance-pop under the moniker Awesome New Republic in 2004. Although a power outage claimed the master recordings of Hearts, the duo’s newest record, ANR successfully replicated the original album’s layered vocals and blippy material entirely from memory in time for a late-October release. Its an unabashedly open-armed affair, full of big '80s choruses that Pet Shop Boys would be jealous of, but filtered through the preset precociousness of modern revivalists like Hot Chip. Expect to hear even more about ANR (for better or worse) now that Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester has publicly massacred its song, "Birthday."
