Balmorhea, Ume, and Sunset at The Parish
With its recent All Is Wild, All Is Silent, Austin’s Balmorhea restored a sense of pastoral calm to the Texas landscape, a vision of wilderness untamed by people and power lines, and whose majesty comes with the dual threat of the unknown lurking just beyond the thrush. Less drowsy and watery than the band's breakthrough, Rivers Arms, the album expands the frames of the group’s cinematic scope to include wordless vocals and driving percussion that occasionally disrupts the serenity. Speaking of which, there’s not much peace to be found in Ume: Lauren Larson’s turbulent trio makes songs that are all snarling fervor and serrated edges. Bill Baird’s Sunset opens with an equally jarring bricolage of alternately skewed and soothing psych-pop.
