Carbon Leaf, Stephen Kellogg And The Sixers, and Toby Lightman at Antone's
Sometimes pegged as a Celtic-rock band, Carbon Leaf doesn’t so much embrace those sounds as flirt with them. Mandolins and tin whistles are involved, but it’s Barry Privett’s confident voice that lands the starring role in the band’s rustic-yet-modern sound. Carbon Leaf underwent some lineup changes after the release of 2006’s Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat, but was able to pull it together for its latest album, the puzzlingly titled Nothing Rhymes With Woman. Opener Stephen Kellogg's work with his band The Sixers lands on a smooth patch somewhere between Springsteen and Petty, and while it lacks the weight and personality of either icon, the band has yet to fall into the treacly, half-assed traps of this mild, constrained territory.
