North Carolina quintet Daughtry is further proof that American Idol is more than an annoyingly ubiquitous primetime circus—it's also a viable launching pad for annoyingly ubiquitous solo careers from its higher-placing contestants. Chris Daughtry was the fourth-place finalist on the show's fifth season, and was received as a Bo Bice-like rocker figure, only more palatable, bald, and painfully devoted to his family. After being eliminated from the show, Daughtry's band was scooped up by RCA Records, and its middling self-titled debut, naturally, shot to No. 1 and outsold the discs released by all of his 2006 Idolmates. The group's sophomore release, the recently released Leave This Town, is similarly packed with warm hooks and plenty of glossy sheen.
