Free Energy, Loxsly, and Mobley at Mohawk
Though some critics gave it a bad rap as a Pavement wannabe due to the undeniable vocal similarities between Paul Sprangers and Stephen Malkmus, Twin Cities band Hockey Night’s straightforward lyricism and pure-love ethos was the antithesis of Pavement’s too-cool inscrutability. Hockey Night called it quits in 2007, but Sprangers and longtime Hockey Night six-string sparring partner Scott Wells are now making a similar-sounding splash with Free Energy, a new band out of Philadelphia that has already drawn international attention thanks to the imprimatur of LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, who added his disco-glam savvy to the group’s DFA debut, due this winter. Free Energy’s both forward- and backward-looking blur of synth-pop futurism and slack post-rock gets an early mirror in opener Loxsly. To win tickets to this event, email austinpromo@theonion.com
