Green Day and Franz Ferdinand at AT&T Center
When future historians look for music that captured the zeitgeist during the Bush era, they’ll give Green Day ample attention. Before 2004, no one could have predicted that based on the band’s snarling, proudly slacked-out pop-punk, but then came 2004’s angsty political rock opera American Idiot, which sold millions and made Green Day newly relevant. The band stays ambitious on the recent 21st Century Breakdown, a similarly despairing look at Bush’s aftermath. Since releasing its self-titled debut full-length, Scottish quartet Franz Ferdinand has continued to crank out glistening, guitar-heavy pop songs—most notably on signature singles “Take Me Out” and “Do You Want To.” Its 2009 release, Tonight, gets a little synth-soggy, but the band’s songwriting sensibilities haven’t faded.
