A.V. Club: Best of the Decade
  • Harlem

Emo's

all ages $5
  • Sat Nov 21 10 pm,
Harlem, Americans In France, ST 37, and The Golden Boys at Emo's

Will its placement at the forefront of twin waves of emergent bands—one originating out of Austin, the other Matador Records—force Harlem to grow up? Can you write songs with such ludicrous conceits as “Psychedelic Tits” once your greatest claim to fame is no longer an oversized bass drum? And how will the band retain its shambling charms if it boasts a full rhythm section? We’ll have to wait until an undisclosed date in 2010 to hear the recorded evidence, but chances are, as long as there are mind-altering substances and analog recording equipment somewhere in the world, the ancestors of Free Drugs ;-) will stay scrappy and feral, no matter how much more attention the world pays them. This mainstage Emo's show is just the first sign that the band is a burgeoning big deal, where it headlines over scene veterans like industrial drone merchants ST 37, boozy black-and-blue balladeers Golden Boys, and Chapel Hill's shambolic, ADD-afflicted Americans In France.
