    Mindy Smith at Cactus Café

Singer-songwriter Mindy Smith's voice has carried her nicely through a sound that leans sometimes toward folk and country, sometimes more toward shiny, jangly pop. Or both at once, in a middle ground where her vocals can really thrive: They're fluid and pristine, yet also mature, putting the melodies ahead of anything showy. After putting down roots in Nashville and earning attention with her stirring cover of “Jolene” on the Dolly Parton tribute record Just Because I’m A Woman, Smith debuted with 2004's strong One Moment More. She's since kept up a mix of respectable, straightforward songwriting and mildly polished production. Smith plays here behind the new album Stupid Love, which follows up the 2007 Christmas disc My Holiday.
