Also Playing: Meese and Ha Ha Tonka and Without A Face

Thu Nov 12
7:30 pm,
The New Heathers, Meese, Ha Ha Tonka, and Without A Face at Emo's Jr.
Missouri's Ha Ha Tonka didn't take long to get its strengths across on 2007's Buckle In The Bible Belt. Not only did it clock in at just a half-hour, but the disc and the band's live show thrived on a tight binding of old-timey four-part harmonies, excitable piano and guitar grooves, and a heap of youthful indignation. After that twangy blast of an introduction, it's understandable the band would want to slow down and build some suspense, which is what happens on the follow-up Novel Sounds Of The Nouveau South. Not that Ha Ha Tonka stopped rocking, but songs like "The Outpouring" expand on the reflective side of its "foot-stompin' indie rock" songwriting.
