Phantom Of The Opera (1925) + Graham Reynolds at Alamo Drafthouse Lamar
Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom Of The Opera has survived countless translations, from cinema to stage and back again, but the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney remains the version that defines all successors. Chaney plays a deformed music lover who stalks the dungeons of the Paris Opera House and falls in love with ingénue Mary Philbin. His expressive performance and grotesque appearance put a stamp of personal obsession on an already obsessive character. Chaney's mournful run through Don Juan Triumphant—moments before his climactic unmasking—will be echoed by composer and Golden Arm Trio mastermind Graham Reynolds, who lends an extra layer of atmosphere to this Halloween screening with the aid of the Alamo Lamar's Wurlitzer.
