As the genre known as dubstep continues to fatten up and assert itself as something more than a mere outgrowth of grime, a set of names (most of them English) has risen to the top of the ranks, Plastician, Scuba, and Mary Anne Hobbs among them. Thanks to his early days hosting pirate radio broadcasts, Plastician is regarded as one of the genre’s originators, and his bass-heavy fusion defines the South London scene he hails from. Scuba’s 2008 album, A Mutual Antipathy, rates as one of dubstep’s best, and he appears here behind the equally forward-thinking new Aesaunic EP. Hobbs is considered a matriarch of dubstep for her eponymous BBC Radio program and many compilations; she opens this free, RSVP-only Scion show alongside local dub practitioner Grommit.
