A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

La Zona Rosa

612 W Fourth St
Austin TX 78701
512-263-4146
all ages $20/$22
  • Wed Nov 25 9 pm,
Ryan Bingham and Scott H. Biram at La Zona Rosa

Ryan Bingham is a Texan singer-songwriter who wears cowboy hats, tours with Patty Griffin, and named his backup band Dead Horses. Before you clear out a space in the pigeonhole, though, listen to Bingham’s mud-caked drawl: With an almost literary authority, all manner of hardscrabble ache and loss pour out of its plaintive depths. The mandolin-etched songs on Bingham’s debut full-length, 2007’s Mescalito, bear scars of blues and show wisps of mariachi and zydeco. His 2009 sophomore effort, Roadhouse Sun, rocks hard even as it lays Bingham's bruised heart bare.
