    Tom Russell at Cactus Café
Tom Russell’s life is the stuff novels are made of: He’s driven a New York cab, toured with a European circus, and obtained a degree in criminology. Russell came to music relatively late in life, but he’s been crafting compelling story-songs for more than 25 years, releasing a string of Americana-noir albums dripping with wit, passion, and the darker side of humanity. But he’s never done anything like 2005’s Hotwalker, which mixed his own vision with voices from the past, including Charles Bukowski (with whom Russell corresponded for nearly 30 years), Lenny Bruce, and Jack Kerouac. He’s currently coasting on 2007’s The Wounded Heart Of America, which includes covers of his songs by artists such as Johnny Cash and Doug Sahm.
