Unwed Sailor and Native Lights at Mohawk

Johnathon Ford’s moody instrumental group Unwed Sailor plucks and plods through swaths that sound like Jim O’Rourke at his rootsiest. The band’s 2006 discs—the sprawling Circles EP and full-length The White Ox—were notable for their shifts in direction from the childlike melodies of 2003’s The Marionette And The Music Box. Emphasizing brooding, nocturnal sounds and adding the haunting, murmuring falsetto of frequent collaborator Dan Burton, those records were contrasted by 2008’s Little Wars, a return to instrumental form, though Ford continues to inject new life into the genre. While fans wait for a follow-up, Ford's energies are currently more focused on the realms of dream pop, shoegaze, and other ethereal, twilight styles explored by side project Native Lights.
