Voodoo Glow Skulls and The Toasters at Red 7
Formed in 1988 by brothers Frank, Eddy, and Jorge Casillas and drummer Jerry O’Neill, Voodoo Glow Skulls whip up a potent mix of third-wave ska and hardcore punk. While their fellow ska survivors have dabbled in things like synthesizers in a desperate effort to stay relevant (looking at you, Less Than Jake), 2007’s Southern California Street Music wisely doesn’t mess with the formula, delivering another raucous round of metal-tinged ragers offset by urgently bleating brass. Offering a purer testament to the lingering vitality of the genre's infectious up-down skank, The Toasters remain one of the best ska acts to do right by the Jamaican style since the heady days of England’s Two-Tone scene.
