10 pm,
The Whigs, The Features, and A Giant Dog at Emo's Jr.
The Whigs charge wildly and eagerly into tight, noisy pop hooks. Their 2008 album, Mission Control, nods at the likes of The Strokes, The Raspberries, Foo Fighters, and The Replacements—cockiness very much included. The band’s best stuff draws heavily on bombastic guitar and drum work, while retaining a mind for wry songwriting. A new album, In The Dark, is due out early next year, so expect some fresh material here. Taking the long road to rock ’n’ roll, The Features debuted as a new-wave band before morphing into an Elephant 6-influenced pop band, and then, finally into a rollicking art-rock outfit. Songs like “Lions,” off the recent Some Kind Of Salvation, are infectiously catchy without being wimpy, so taut and purposeful in their hooks that they require multiple listens. Austin's A Giant Dog brings apocalyptic clangor topped by frontwoman Sabrina Ellis' bluesy yowl.
