Having played host to countless performances by luminaries like Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson in its more than 40-year history, Broken Spoke has a more than justifiable reputation as a country-western landmark. On weekend evenings in particular, the South Austin parlor brings in plenty of happily married, handsome, semi-rural couples, as well as a number of urban hipsters who may come for the irony, but who stay for genuine appreciation of one of the city’s most boisterous dancehalls. Meanwhile, the kitchen dishes out hamburgers, nachos, and other things you probably already guessed at a few sentences back, while the ranch hands—pretend and otherwise—order up a slab of the famous chicken-fried steak.
