Smack in the middle of the confounding Barton Springs-Riverside-South First triangle, Zax manages to be a lot of things to a lot of people. For nearby office workers, it’s a casual lunchtime spot to grab a burger or gourmet salad, and maybe a handcrafted beer (from a rotating selection of 20 on tap). For the young and indigent, it’s a great place to hit during happy hour for cheaper drinks and a special $7 menu. Dinner entrées run the gamut from Tex-Mex to roasted chicken to pasta, though the crab cakes are a favorite item, available at every meal, including Sunday brunch (try them in Zax eggs, a house spin on eggs Benedict).
