Want to eat someplace old this week? The apartment-finding website Domu has put together a nifty list of the city’s vintage restaurants to commemorate Chicago Restaurant Week. Eateries at least a half-century old made the cut, with Schaller’s Pump (opened on the South Side in 1881) being the oldest, followed by Daley’s Restaurant (1892) and The Berghoff (1898) to round out the 19th century. The oldest Chinese restaurant in the city is Orange Garden (1924), and the oldest “true Italian” place is Italian Village (1927). Notably, of the 58 restaurants on the list, nine are pizzerias, and seven are hot dog joints, confirming Chicago’s long-standing love affair with those foods. Domu admits the list is not exhaustive, which might explain the glaring omission of Medieval Times.
