Chicago United Film Fest takes over the Music Box Sept. 9-15

Bid adieu to summertime movie in the park events and hole up at the Music Box Theatre Sept. 9-15 for Chicago’s United Film Festival.
Since 2002, United has morphed from a Tulsa-based film extravaganza to a traveling event that sets itself apart by showing kitschy ’80s favorites alongside some of the year’s best independent films and shorts.
This time around, the festival is featuring Superheroes, a documentary highlighting the life and times of not especially super (but still dressed up) vigilantes; Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians, which details “blasphemous” Christ followers as they repeatedly scam the casino circuit; and White Irish Drinkers, a coming-of-age feature about a wannabe artist in the throws of crime and domestic turmoil.
As if all of that wasn’t enticing enough, the organizers have thrown in The Blues Brothers and Sixteen Candles along with a slew of other flicks to sweeten the deal.
Although individual shows go for $10, dedicated film aficionados can indulge in seven days worth of movie magic for $50, or $25 for students.
