News Net Daley Plaza's fountain is hot pink for Blackhawks, trend-defying record store opens in Logan Square

Since sifting through dull newspapers, hyperbolic blogs, and overflowing RSS feeds for meaningful news can be an arduous process, News Net catches and compiles both the amusing and the significant reports that were overlooked throughout the weekend. Here are some things to think about as the workweek begins.

• The Daley Plaza fountain gushed hot pink water on Friday after the city added red dye to support the Blackhawks during the NHL Western Conference Finals. Confused onlookers speculated the pink was for Croatian-American Day or breast-cancer awareness. The city can only honor so many causes, people. [via CBS2]

• Graffiti art created during a recent visit from British street artist Banksy is still being uncovered, most recently in Pilsen on a deteriorating stone wall, now with big black eyes and a speech bubble that says, “You concrete me.” With puns like that, Banksy has a bright future as a newspaper headline writer.

• A would-be robber was thwarted by an OnStar call early Friday morning on the South Side. The robber had forced a husband and wife to drive to a South Side currency exchange and cash a check at gunpoint, when the wife cleverly feigned being chilly and received permission to grab her coat from the car–using the OnStar service to notify police in the process. But the most peculiar tidbit from the story: The woman’s husband was targeted by the robber because he was “dressed in a bright red suit and alligator boots” and walking around the neighborhood 4:30 a.m. after a night of karaoke—which, in the robber's mind, is something only a pimp would do. Might want to just wear a pair of loafers next time. [via Chicago Breaking News]

• Amidst the steady exodus of record stores in the last decade, comes the opening of Saki, a new, genuine music-selling store in Logan Square at 3716 W. Fullerton Ave. The store, owned by Carrot Top Distribution and slated to open May 29, will feature in-store live performances and sell vinyl, turntables, as well as a bygone relic called “CDs.” Seriously though, good luck.

•If it seems like Kanye West or a Yeezy-based brouhaha has been conspicuously missing from the news lately, don’t worry–a new album, due out in September, should change that.

• CTA 5000-series car news of the week: The Green Line incorporates the sleek prototypes starting today, according to the Sun-Times. Among the features of the new cars are seven networked security cameras, so don’t even think about eating that candy bar.
