Dec. 4-6: Zero 7, Bob Saget, Star Wars: In Concert
Friday
On 2009's Yeah Ghost, Zero 7 strikes a nice balance between sultry trip-hop and spunky, danceable beats, perfect for a low-lit loungy club—or for the Metro, where they'll be playing tonight. It's unlikely, though, that the British duo will drop their trousers and perform scrotal exercises; for that you'll have to check out Puppetry Of The Penis at Lakeshore Theater. If you've always dreamed of seeing manipulation of the human phallus into an array of unnatural shapes accompanied by amusing narrative, well, tonight is your night!
CunninLynguists know how to deliver a good pun; fortunately, they're just as good at rapping around seductive beats as they are with clever wordplay. Check them out at Subterranean and come up with your own puns about their tongues' talents. If you're into seriously raunchy comedy, jump across state lines to the Horseshoe Hammond Casino where stand-up comedian and actor Bob Saget will hopefully perform his famed version of the Aristocrats joke, or at least spill some dirt on what was really going on behind the scenes at Full House. For something a little less filthy, head to The Empty Bottle for the folky balladry of Seattle boy-girl duo The Dutchess And The Duke, whose lovely harmonies perfectly fit a mellow evening.
The late Wesley Willis is still near and dear to the hearts of many Chicagoans, and those who still miss the late punk rocker's weird subject matter and off-key vocals can relive his art with Chris Bagley and Kim Shivley's documentary Wesley Willis's Joyrides, showing for free at Empty Bottle. Alternatively, Star Wars geeks have a chance to show their significant others that an intense passion for Boba Fett doesn't have to manifest in tawdry and disturbingly complete action figure collections: Take your date to the United Center for Star Wars: In Concert, where C-3PO himself, Anthony Daniels, and the Royal Philharmonic perform John Williams' classic scores, bringing a touch of elegance and refinement to the franchise. Your move, Trekkies.
