Float on to the record store
And buy the new Modest Mouse single
One of the more recent bands to make use of Johnny Marr's talents is releasing a new single on red vinyl, in a limited-edition of 4,000. It's the third of four singles that will be collected in a forthcoming EP, No One's First And You're Next, and it's also getting an online release via iTunes. But the real news is that today, July 13, the band is giving folks a sneak listen to the title track, "Perpetual Motion Machine," on Spin's website.
First impression: It's strange stuff, complete with a New Orleans horn section, lightly plucked guitar, and a certain rambling sensibility. It's a new direction, but it's easily recognizable as Modest Mouse. (Though that might be because Isaac Brock sounds like no one else.)
Modest Mouse is heading out on tour next month after the new album comes out on Aug. 4. The tour kicks off in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and includes stops in Chicago August 25; Montreal; Toronto; Billings, Mont.; and Honolulu (at a place called the Pipeline Cafe!), as well as festival gigs at Seattle's Bumbershoot in September and the UK's All Tomorrow's Parties in December.
