Fred Armisen releases 7-inch based on an SNL sketch about D.C. hardcore

Portlandia creator and Saturday Night Live player Fred Armisen has once again reminded the populace that he’s, like, totally punk, man. 15-odd years after Armisen drummed in post-punk Chicago band Trenchmouth, he’s released a new 7-inch, Fist Fight!, on Drag City Records. The record, which was recorded by Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, was inspired by a Feb. 2010 SNL sketch about an ’80s hardcore band that reunites at a wedding.
In the sketch, Dave Grohl plays drums and Ashton Kutcher plays guitar, but Armisen plays all the instruments on the 7-inch and wrote the B-side, “Kick It Down And Kick It Around.” The record came out to little to no fanfare earlier this summer on Drag City, and an awesome clip of “Fist Fight” can be heard on the label’s site. The band also released an interview it supposedly did with Stabber fanzine back in 1984 that’s well worth a read, especially for anyone with an interest in Black Flag, Minor Threat, or being 16 and mad.
